One variable at a time, or the reading means nothing
Two changes made together produce one number you cannot attribute. Putting each setting back before the next experiment is what makes the sequence evidence instead of anecdote.
A healthy, hardened platform and permission to spoil it: pile on virtual cores and read the wait time, promise memory the host cannot back and watch it leave the guests, then pull a storage path and read the response time. Put every change back and prove the score returned.
Mission brief · V-530
the break-glass IR account `svc-ir`, checked out of the vault for this incident — never the compromised identity
The detection fired in the EDR console. You opened a live-response session from that detection, so your shell rides the EDR agent channel — containing the host will *not* cut you off, which is exactly why you contain from here rather than over SSH.

Owner: The system's business owner, named on the asset record
Containing a host you haven't identified can stop revenue. Check criticality and owner before you isolate anything.

You learn what a failing platform looks like far faster by causing it in a place where it does not matter than by waiting for it. Every change here has a number attached on both sides of it, so the shapes — wait time accelerating, memory leaving the guests, a path gone — become recognizable rather than theoretical.
Two changes made together produce one number you cannot attribute. Putting each setting back before the next experiment is what makes the sequence evidence instead of anecdote.
Doubling the oversubscription does not double the wait; it rises steeply once the host runs out of cores to hand out. That curve is the reason a platform can be fine one week and unusable the next with no obvious change.
The platform declining to resize a running guest, or to enter maintenance with workload on it, is a guard rail. Recording exactly what it demands teaches the precondition better than any document does.
Every change made here is one the console can undo, and proving the score came back is the last step. A change with no way back does not belong in an experiment.
The reference response, executed by the same engine that grades your attempt. Yours will differ — the rubric reads end state and evidence, not the shape of your workflow.
Gate approved — 100%
17 of 17 rubric rules hold.
Gate denied — 93%
Refusing the consequential action is a defensible choice with a measured cost; the difference is what the lab is teaching.
Spoiling a platform deliberately teaches what resource exhaustion looks like from the console, so the same shape arriving unannounced — wait time climbing, memory reclaimed, a path gone — is recognized as a symptom to be traced rather than a mystery.

The workflow reached a terminal success state on the graded run.
behavior · weight 20
A reversible action passed through a human approval gate.
safety · weight 15
No non-idempotent operation was retried without an idempotency key.
efficiency · weight 10
Every action node resolves its secret from the vault, never an inline field.
configuration · weight 10
The learner attached at least one linkable piece of evidence to the case.
investigation · weight 10
The case carries an analyst closure note explaining the outcome.
explanation · weight 10
No innocent asset in the alert batch was contained, disabled or revoked.
behavior · weight 15
The playbook survived the integration faults it met and still finished.
configuration · weight 15
Nothing was changed in the estate before evidence had been gathered.
investigation · weight 10
The platform was worked in the console rather than described from the ticket.
investigation · weight 15
The healthy state was recorded before anything was spoiled.
investigation · weight 10 · T1082 System Information Discovery (Discovery)
The platform's own guard rail was found by hitting it, not by reading about it.
investigation · weight 10 · T1078 Valid Accounts (Defense Evasion)
The change was made properly and the resulting ratio read off the host.
configuration · weight 10 · T1082 System Information Discovery (Discovery)
The effect on wait time was measured at the moment the cause changed.
configuration · weight 10 · T1082 System Information Discovery (Discovery)
One variable was changed at a time, so the memory reading means something.
configuration · weight 10 · T1082 System Information Discovery (Discovery)
The storage path was shown to matter with a number rather than an opinion.
configuration · weight 10 · T1046 Network Service Discovery (Discovery)
The cost of the critical check was measured in the score itself.

Deliberate, reversible degradation is how you learn any system's failure signature before it shows up unannounced on a night you did not choose.
